Vladimir Vasilievich writes to the newspaper a story about the capture of Field Marshal Paulus. An archival essay.

Perhaps Vladimir Vasilievich heard that the Writers' Union accepts those writers who have published two books.

If we think by analogy, then the Union of Journalists is accepted, if such a person has at least two publications in the newspaper.

Vladimir Vasilievich has one publication. In the newspaper "Molot" "... There was a battle on the square" ("Molot" in issue nomber 108 (20197) of May 9, 1989 on page 3).

Everyone seems to be interested in history in general, and the history of Rostov-on-Don in particular.

Moreover, all patriots - just somebody starts talking about patriotism and exploits - and it is already impossible to pass because of the crowd of journalists surrounding the narrator.

But the world of the press is mysterious. Vladimir Vasilievich has a lot of historical material - but he can't to 'promote' this material to the newspapers ...

But now is a special moment!

An old acquaintance of Vladimir Vasilievich got into a car accident. A car crashed into the car that this acquaintance was driving at the intersection. Alas! This acquaintance passed away.

This man served for a long time in the system of the Ministry of the Interior, and after retiring, he headed the Rostov representative office of AiF.

Vladimir Vasilievich wrote the material. It seems this material was sent to the AiF. This idea is suggested by a receipt for sending a registered letter to the AiF.

And next to the receipt is a draft.

This draft contains memories of friendship and cooperation (of Vladimir Vasilievich) with two intellectual people from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In the text, paragraph indents highlight the sentence: "In those years, our contacts helped me to realize the following task concerning Komsomolskaya Square."

  What are these words about?

The situation is clarified by the phrase: 'At the publishing house [of the Molot newspaper], the three of us went up to the office of the head of one of the departments...'.

Apparently, it was then that the story about the heroic defense of Rostov-on-Don in November 1941 was "pushed" to print.

Memories about an old acquaintance - the director of the Rostov representative office of AiF - continue:

'... On the anniversary of the victory at Stalingrad, I called him and, I confess somewhat chaotically, told the following episode.

After the end of the Great Patriotic War, my cousin Maria, a school teacher, was courted by a certain captain Vanya K [surname], who had restrained manners, a good physique and a neat appearance, combined with unpretentiousness in everyday life. It was known that in the past he was a front-line soldier, but the details of this were not discussed. After some time, Maria and Vanya got married. At the appointed time, their daughter was born ... After a short time, the parents of the baby turned to me with an unexpected request to be the godfather of their daughter. I agreed, although I hasn't the age of a patriarch and I did not really understand what my tasks and duties were.

The baptism took place in that church at the cemetery in the New Settlement [the region of city], which were demolished, and the Palace of Sports was built on their territory (or nearby) ...

I must say that the temple remained in my memory as a rather large structure. The priest was large and not old.

The father of the baptized girl was in uniform and with awards. At that time, this was some kind of courage, because despite some indulgence in relation to religion, visiting the church by officers and their participation in rituals was 'not recommended'. And the deviation from the recommendations was fraught with consequences.

After a successfully completed baptism, we went home, where there was a festive dinner, the participants of which were only parents and me ...

He [Captain Vanya K[surname]] explained that he served in a special department...

  ...I... heard the following story...

'... I,' said Captain I.K [surname], 'was instructed to start an operation to capture Field Marshal Paulus and his headquarters in a well-known department store in Stalingrad. I took a squad of soldiers, and still in the dark we approached the gate of a fence of the department store. They were closed. We began to knock on the gate with rifle butts - there was no result. Then a soldier (Red Army soldier? - Azerbaijani Akhmetov?) climbed into the yard and opened the gate.

  We entered the yard.

At the entrance to the basement and in some other places there were German sentries.

I placed my sentries next to the Germans, and went down to the basement myself. I examined the overall picture, made sure of the relative stability [of situation], went upstairs and gave a signal. After that, the high ranks went to the basement."

I [that is, Vladimir Vasilievich] asked questions that arose from my little acquaintance with the situation in the combat zone:

  - And that our soldiers were standing next to the German sentries - was this during the war?

  - Yes!

  - And if one of the Germans was a fanatic or a neurotic and would start a shooting to you?

  - Of course, there was a risk. Occupational risk. But there was also an agreement on the radio with the enemy. The operation was not carried out randomly. There was some preparation.

  - What did you see when you went down to the basement? Were there tantrums?

  - No, there was an atmosphere of calm gloomy expectation (outwardly it was a calm mood).

After that, the conversation moved on to other topics ...

After some time, he [Captain I.K [surname]] received a referral to ... a post in militia ..., received a very small apartment ... We rarely saw each other ... ".

If there is a draft, if there is a receipt for sending a registered letter, then there should be a publication.

Yes indeed! Nearby is a clipping from the AiF (number 40), dated October 3-10, 2005.

  What is written in it?

  "Memory.

  Competition named after Nikolai V[surname]

  Dear friends of our newspaper!

... We are announcing a contest named after Nikolai V[surname]. It will be a competition for the best reader's letter about unusual twists of fate ...

We will sum up the results of the competition in December ...

Please send your letters to us..."

It's good that the name has the word "memory" in it! Periodicals are interested in stories about the heroic past of our Motherland!

Vladimir Vasilievich has, for example, several letters from participants in the defense of Rostov-on-Don in November 1941.

  Here is one of them:

  "May 19, 1989.

  City of Rostov

Associate Professor of the State University

  Comrade V. Zalessky

On May 9, 1989, the Molot newspaper printed "There was a battle on the square."

And that you turned to various authorities with a request to assist in the search for participants in the battles on Rostov-Gora ... Some survived ...

In November 1941, I was wounded. I was carriedby two by Zhora Lebedev and by the second one, I don't remember the name. A woman bandaged me on the 1st floor. And, the wounded, with a part I was sent to Nalchik ...

The unit commander presented me, Starodubtsev Leonid Trofimovich, as well as Lebedev Georgy Andreevich for an award for operation on the Rostov-Gora, and to this day we receive ... I am a guard lieutenant veteran and invalid of the Patriotic War of the II group. I have government awards the Order of the Red Star and 2 Orders of Patriotic War, of 1st and 2nd degrees, military medals for the capture of Budapest, Vienna and for the capture of Germany and 7 anniversary medals and 10 thanks from I.V. Stalin...

Unintentionally, a neighbor [from] another house told me that in the Molot it is described about my participation. Everything is right, as it was. (...)

You did not indicate your exact address, but we are sending [our letters] to the State University for Associate Professor V. Zalessky.

The newspaper was borrowed from the library, as the neighbor tore his own. And we gave newspaper back to the library. Goodbye.

Starodubtsev. Disabled of Patriotic War of II group."

The letter is also a historical document.

And since all the inhabitants of our country, and in particular, the media, have a huge interest in history, patriotism and heroic deeds, then Vladimir Vasilievich has a chance to "push" another publication to the newspaper.

And with two publications, he (Vladimir Vasilievich) - if desired - will be able to write an application for admission to the Union of Journalists ...
