Vasily Alexandrovich serves in the army (before and after October 1917 - until 1926). An archival essay.

Vasily Alexandrovich serves in the army (before and after October 1917 - until 1926). An archival essay.

There is almost no information about the service of Vasily Aleksandrovich Zalessky (1896 - 1965) in the army until October 1917.

The storage of documents on this topic until the 50s of the 20th century was perceived as something very risky - almost the deadly. The words "tsarist officer" could lead to the end of life's journey. So people tried not to remember, not to think, not to talk about it.

It has been preserved in the family memory that a little baby Vladimir Vasilyevich smashed awards with a hammer in childhood. - awards received by his father - Vasily Alexandrovich in the pre-revolutionary period.

  What is left?

Two autobiographies remain (dated April 15, 1948 and April 23, 1948).

An autobiography dated April 15, 1948 says: "In 1915 I was drafted into the army. In the Old Army, I participated in the battles on the Turkish and Romanian fronts until the armistice with Germany. I met the October Revolution while in the active 4th Army the 101 Infantry Perm regiment in the Carpathians. 101 infantry The Perm regiment went over to the side of Soviet power without any hesitation. After the conclusion of the Brest peace and the liquidation of the fronts, I was demobilized on 15/V, 1918. With the emergence of new fronts, I was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army on 1/X 1918 and was again fired for a long leave in 1926 ... ".

In his autobiography dated April 23, 1948, he writes: "In 1915, by early conscription, I was mobilized into the Old Army, in which I served until November 7, 1917. [Until February 1917, the Army was Imperial, and from February-March 1917 to November 7, 1917, apparently, it is correct to call it the Russian Army] I met the October Revolution at the front (Carpathian Mountains), while serving in the 101st Perm regiment, which without fluctuations went over from the [first] day of the revolution to the side of Soviet power. In the 101st Perm regiment, by election, I served as a company commander and a member of the regimental committee.

After the conclusion of the Brest Peace, I was demobilized on 15/V, 1918.

With the emergence of new fronts, I was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army on 1/X-1918, where I occupied a number of command and administrative positions (company commander, assistant of battalion commander, battalion commander, assistant of regiment commander, head of reconnaissance, assistant head of a combat area and head of a separate detachment). [MMDCCCLXXXIV. Vasily Alexandrovich writes the autobiography. An archival essay. - April 14, 2022.].

There is practically no mention of studying at the school of ensigns and promotion until 1917. (A landmark - "According to the elections in the 101st Perm regiment, I held the position of company commander.")

Documents about the life and service of his fellow countryman - regiment commander - documents obtained during rehabilitation in the 50s of the 20th century (or later) can indirectly illuminate the career path of Vasily Alexandrovich.

In miniature "[MMDCCCXXXVII.] Vasily Alexandrovich writes a certificate for the NKVD. Archive essay" I published a Certificate and an extract from the protocol of the Troika of the UNKVD for the Azov-Black Sea Territory of November 17, 1937.

There is an interesting phrase in the Certificate: "There was no case that our units did not show vigilance." It seems that in this phrase there is the pride of a person who performed his official duties with skill and responsibility ...

What else document can to provide information?

I continue to turn over the sheets of paper. I find a dilapidated and faded document called "The Military Service List" ["Service Records"].

It's necessary to open it, hold it in your hands and leaf through it with extreme care: it is almost falling apart from dilapidation.

  What is interesting here?

The document was typed on a typewriter, so it has some advantages over handwritten texts.

"2. When was born and what locality was born in? Here it is clearly printed: Hutor Drzhepolsk."

  "3. General.

What military, cadet school, school of ensigns, instructor courses and when graduated. "Gori School of Ensigns" [I quote the wording in accordance with the original].

When entered the service ... further service ...

  IN THE OLD ARMY

Mobilized by early conscription 1915 August 7
Promoted to the 1st officer rank 1915 November 28
Promoted to second lieutenant in 101 Perm. regiment, the commander of company and, by election, the Head of Cultural Education of the same regiment 1917 [unreadable] 14

  IN THE RED ARMY

Called by mobilization in the Red Army 1918 October 1

  (...)

Arrived in the 1st Rostov n/D sentry regiment and was appointed to the position of commander of company 7 of variable composition, the order number 114 paragraph 4 1920 June 8. (Why is the word "sentry" present? In the Certificate, Vasily Alexandrovich wrote: " ... in 1920 and 1921, the 1st Rostov Regiment, the 38th Separate Rifle Brigade ... was entrusted with the protection and defense of the city of Rostov-on-Don, of the railway node, of bridges and of the railway lines to Tikhoretskaya, to Novocherkassk, to Kotelnikov and to other points.".

(Further, he served as the commander of a company, of a battalion, of a team of equestrian scouts, he was sent to the rear militia, was returned; the assistant battalion commander, temporary battalion commander, appointed to the position of supply manager of the regiment, handed over the position of supply manager of the regiment, appointed company commander ...).

Dismissed on indefinite leave to the Rostov N / D military enlistment office in accordance with the order of the Strategic Missile Forces number 506 of 24, 1925 [the number "5" is written by hand] May 24.

This page has a stamp on which the date is clearly read: December 31, 1946. It is written by hand: " in reserve, commander".

A significant amount of information is not readable: the letters are faded, some of the text (illegible) is written by hand, the paper falls apart at the folds.

Although this information did not have (widely) dissemination, there was a certain amount of information in the military department about the pre-revolutionary service of Vasily Alexandrovich.

The school of ensigns is confirmed.

Further "I-th officer rank" from 1915 to 1917.

In 1917 - the month is not readable - he was promoted to second lieutenant.

(Of course, from a certain point of view, "the staff captain" sounds more serious when compared with "second lieutenant". If - at least - be "lieutenant" [without "second"] ... "Ensign" - almost a proletarian ... "Ensign" - does not sound solid enough... Maybe , the rank of second lieutenant was received by Vasily Alexandrovich after February-March 1917? In such case, he did not really fit under the plate [plaque] of the "tsarist officer" ... Even if he fought on the Turkish and Romanian fronts ...).

In the Red Army, Vasily Alexandrovich mainly served as a company commander.

"From 1926 to 1930 I was studying," he writes in his autobiography. A civil life began - life outside of military service.

  1941 - again the mobilization.

His service in the Red Army after 1941 is an independent issue. Maybe some questions will be of interest and it would be advisable to devote a separate essay to them?

Documents about his service after mobilization in 1941 have been preserved, for example, about his rank - captain, about his position - head of the hospital train. There is a certificate for the medal "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945." (April 28, 1946).

What was almost not spoken aloud - some details of the service in the period before the October Revolution - they were found in the dilapidated "The Military Service List" ["Service Records"].
