5 Reichsmark of General Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist (1935). An antiquarian note.

5 Reichsmark of General Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist (1935). An antiquarian note.

On November 28, 1941, a noticeable frost was felt.

The Kleist tank group began to retreat from Rostov-on-Don to the Mius River.

An unpleasant situation. The first noticeable retreat during the military campaign in Russia ...

But the general's mood was under influence of perfectly cooked - fried - potatoes. Potatoes were cooked by the hostess of the house in which von Kleist settled.

The stomach sent positive impulses to the brain of the general.

The general's mood was not so bad. A soldier must be ready for anything.

The unreliability of the plan to capture Rostov was clear, was understandable even earlier.

The persistent resistance of the defenders of Rostov on November 20, 1941 showed the complexity of the strategic situation in the South.

A local woman appeared on the threshold of the room, - the woman, who prepared the excellent fried potatoes.

The the general reached into his pocket.

  - Do you have any coin? - the general asked the batman (the orderly).

The batman (the orderly) at that moment was packing the general's winter hunting jacket for transportation. The jacket was very useful for use during periods of relative rest after starting of the frost weather.

The batman felt for some coin in the pocket of the general's hunting jacket. He took out a coin and handed it to von Kleist.

Ewald von Kleist glanced at the coin. 5 Reichsmark? With a portrait of the Hindenburg?

  All of this is annoying...

  But fried potatoes are good...

  - Gut. Danke.

The general put the coin on the table. "These fried potatoes make this day just a little bit nice...."

It's time to leave. It's time to retreat.

After the war, in 1945, one of the defenders of Rostov-on-Don (in the day of November 20, 1941), Vladimir Vasilyevich Zalessky, a student at a technical school, repaired a German record player at the request of one of the Rostov women. Now she could sell the record player at the flea market, along with the stock of records left after the retreat of the German army in November 1941, and provide herself with food for half a year or even for a year.

No one could fix the German record player. Nobody even had the courage to make an any effort to fix it. Everyone to whom the woman addressed looked respectfully at the German record player and silently - negatively - shook their heads.

Vladimir looked at the ausländischer Spieler, became interested, began to twist something with screwdrivers, did something, and ... the record player started working!

The delighted woman gave the skillful Vladimir a German coin of 5 marks (with the indication "1935") in gratitude.

So Vladimir Vasilyevich Zalessky became the owner of a coin worth 5 Reichsmark, which previously belonged to General Ewald von Kleist.

I believe in this version in the same way that Heinrich Schliemann believed that the heroes of Homer's works touched the objects he discovered in Greece.

After many years, I inherited this coin.

Circumstances force me to sell various things what I have...

I'll try to find out the value of the coin (in our days).

I will make a sale announcement, I will put up a coin for sale.

... I compiled the text of the sale announcement:

"5 Reichsmark of General Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist (1935). From white metal (I - for myself - perceive this metal as silver. But I did not conduct a chemical analysis of the metal and an examination of authenticity).

Coin condition: 87 years old (2022-1935=87) have left their traces. This coin looks good.
