I didn't pay close attention to Esperanto, but is it indeed a live language, a native language to anybody? I can't think of any community where Esperanto is (or was) used as natural means of communication. For what I know, for the esperantists themselves it's but a linguistic game, or another foreign language at best. Even if a child born to a family of esperantists were taught this language from the very beginning, with Esperanto there is no language environment to speak of seriously, so even such a child wouldn't in fact use the language in everyday life. And while a language is not used by a certain community daily, for solving various tasks, it's never fully developed.
Actually, it's not specific to artificial languages only. The sign linguistics gives perfect examples of languages developed long time ago, even native to some people, but never fully developed. E.g., the sign languages of some Providence and Grand Cayman islands. Deaf people there are integrated into the community life only partially, and the sign languages serve only basic daily needs, but never anything more complex. Thus, no complex grammar or abstract vocabuary develops, and the language remains rather primitive.
One person - of whatever age - can't create a fully developed language. A language is a means of communication, and as such it always needs a community to emerge and develop.

The first 5 years. Child's linguistic creativity. This is why among c. 1000 projects of artificial languages but one survived. Esperanto was conceived by a gifted child from a language teachers' family living in a ghetto - like a linguistic game. His predecessors' diaspora had adapted several local language and their own sacred language Hebrew, developing Ladino (Judesmo), Yiddish and others. UInfortunately, the routine didactics do not permit even esperantists themselves to comprehend the utterly simplicistic system of Esperanto, which continues to be taught scholastically.
